During the Healthy Living Summit in August, there was a session on staying healthy while traveling that I missed because I wanted to hear Katy Widrick speak. I wish I would have been able to go, but with all things in life you have have to prioritize, make choices and sometimes skip something important to accomplish something a little more important.....
Lately my life has been upside down as I've been traveling more and more for work. I made the big move to Philly so I could start building a more normal life, creating a community, etc., but the universe has since had different plans. I've spent less time in Philly than I have on the road. Am I whining? Well, just a little. But as with all thngs good and bad that are thrown our way there are lessons to be learned.
Arriving at my hotel at 9pm last Tuesday in Minneapolis last week after working a long day and getting up at 4:30am to travel, I was confronted with the above pictured menu of death. I don't know if you can really see the options as I'm not the expert picture taker my sister is, but basically the options ranged from buffallo wngs to pasta with alfredo sauce which was probably around 1000 calories at least. I'd had a salad with chicken for lunch, and I'm not the biggest chicken fan or a crappy hotel salad fan, so I opted for a cheese quesadilla that I couldn't even bring myself to take a picture of. I believe there are some very good quesadillas out there and some very bad ones. This one was the latter. After about three bites, I asked the waitress if I could get some kind of side of fruit. Luckily she brought me a big bowl of grapes.
If at first you don't succeed.....Food wise the week got a little better. The next night I got off work a tad bit earlier, so was able to go to Byerlys and stock up on some Kombucha which helped a little bit. And, I ordered my favorite salad from local resataurant. The Ciao Baby salad is much tastier than it looks: goat cheese, spinach and spring mix, pine nuts and steak with a vinagrette. Yum.
The rest of the week was hit and miss - foodwise. Was lucky to have access to oatmeal in the morning, salads for lunch, but by Thursday night, I gave up and went for some spinach and feta pizza which isn't really that bad of a choice, but my body doesn't really deal all that well with dairy even though I love it (thus, quesadilla on Tues).
The good news was that the hotel gym was pretty decent, so I managed to drag my tired self to the gym twice doing weights on the first day and some dreadmill running the second (was dark outside). On the third day I did some quick body weight exercises in the hotel room (pushups, tricep dips, ballet squats, lunges, regular squats, ab bicycyles, crunches and that ab exercise where you bring your knees and chest in to meet and then straighten without touching the floor - what on earth is that called....can't remember).
Overall, I give myself a B+ for the week. Could have done a few longer workouts, but pretty dang proud I exercised every day on the road. And, work was p-r-e-t-t-y stressful, so I DID resist the urge to curl up in a ball and nonstop feel sorry for myself in the hotel. The thing I most proud of is I actually squeezed in a much needed haircut. Sometimes it's the little things....

Monica from runeatrepeat might admonish me for telling folks I'll be out of town, but burgulars, bring it on. I live a spartan life and there ain't nothing worthwhile to steal. Plus you would have to unpack all the boxes to find anything which would actually be a big help.
